Researchers uncover more anti-cancer qualities in green tea

Recent research shows that green tea's cancer fighting capabilities may be even more effective and diverse that previously thought. Researchers have found that certain natural chemicals in green tea inhibit the activity of the body's molecules that are attacked by tobacco. Scientists at the University of Rochester's Environmental Health Science Center say that this helps to explain why people who consume the age-old drink seem less likely to develop cancer.
Scientists have long thought that the cancer fighting antioxidants in green tea were responsible for not only reducing the risk of developing cancer, but also helping to lower cholesterol and hinder development of rheumatoid arthritis. But researchers at the University of Rochester looked at how the tea's chemicals affect the aryl hydrocarbon (AH) receptor, the molecule targeted and manipulated by tobacco smoke and dioxin. The AH receptor stimulates harmful genes that can damage the body.
When researchers isolated green tea's chemicals, they found that two chemicals - epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) and epigallocatechin (EGC) - hinder AH activity. These two chemicals share similarities with other flavanoids found in red wine, grapes and broccoli that are known to help prevent cancer. Tests showed that EGCG and EGC shut down the AH receptor in cancerous mouse cells early tests show that these chemicals have the same effect on human cells, say the researchers.
"Right now we don't know if drinking the amount of green tea that a person normally drinks would make a difference, but the work is giving us insight into how the proteins work," said graduate student Christine Palermo. "There are a lot of differences between various kinds of green tea, so a lot more research is needed," Palermo said.
While scientists uncover the true anti-cancer qualities of one of the most popular beverages worldwide, it seems clear that the overall health benefits are undeniable. Even if a cup a day doesn't keep cancer completely away, it could certainly keep the doctor at bay.
